The scientists, in this case of creating penis for rabbits, have used a new technique of tissue engineering. In this new method they used the animals' own cells to build the spongy tissue structure that makes up the size of the penis. The scientists implanted the newly engineered tissues of corpora into rabbit's penis. The original tissues were completely removed before implanting the new tissue. And to the urologists' success, the rabbit started mating within one month of the implantation. Anthony Atala emphasizes that the corpora tissues were grown from the animal's own tissue, so the engineered tissue would be a perfect match to the human or the animal and that is why it would be completely accepted by the immune system of a body. He insists that with this technology, there are chances to restore the erectile capacity of a man naturally and cure ED permanently. The study was presented by Anthony Atala at the annual meeting of American Urological Association in Atlanta , Georgia , US. Medical experts express through a word of caution, asking the researchers to establish that the engineered corporal chambers are properly integrated with the rest of the organ to make sure that all the blood vessels are connected. It is important so that the new tissue functions properly without turning into damaged tissue like the original tissue. However, Allen Seftel of the University Hospitals of Cleveland , Ohio , US says that the process is obviously promising but at the same time he reminds that this is very, very preliminary. Ira Sharlip, a clinical professor of urology at the University of California , San Francisco , US , who was not a part of the research, considers the tissue engineering method as the landmark development in surgery in general. Many other scientists are very hopeful about the technology because it can help those with congenital penile abnormalities and those who lost the strength or part of the penis because of cancer.
