Inhibited Sexual Desire
An Introductory Note
From amongst all the male sexual dysfunctions, inhibited sexual desire(ISD) is a prominent one, on suffering from this sexual dysfunction, the afflicted male no longer remains responsive towards the sexual advances of his partner or himself fails to start the sexual intercourse and take it to a further level. Inhibited Sexual Desire is a sexual dysfunction seen in both the sexes and it is also known as frigidity, sexual apathy, sexual aversion or hypoactive sexual desire.
Inhibited Sexual Desire is basically of four types: primary, secondary, situational and general inhibited sexual desire. A person with Primary ISD is likely to rarely feel the sexual desire or interest and for one under the grip of Secondary ISD it is possible that he might have possessed sexual desire at a certain point of time which is no longer influential on him. In situational ISD, the person concerned is interested in women other than his partner and in general ISD, the person is not sexually interested in anyone.

Lifestyle Factors
- Lack of emotional intimacy or closeness between the partners
- Communication gap between the partners
- Excessive conservatism towards sexual issues
- Suffering from horrific sexual experiences like rape, incest and other kinds of sexual abuses
Illnesses & Medicines
- Insomnia, lack of proper sleep and other similar illnesses and disturbed physical behavior that lead to fatigue, pain and malaise
- Depression, stress and similar psychological conditions
- Shortage of hormones in the body
- Erectile dysfunction or retarded ejaculation in a man

A person's lack of sexual desire is symptomatic of his ISD.
General tests For The Identification of Inhibited Sexual Desire
- Testing the testosterone levels in a male can reveal whether he is suffering from ISD or not. This test is usually conducted before 10 am when the testosterone level in the blood remains at its peak.
- Discussion with an urologist or a sex specialist helps to find out the real truth.
How To Prevent Inhibited Sexual Desire
- Reading and viewing of romantic novels and romantic movies can take the couple to a closer level and prevent them from falling prey to ISD.
- Intimate talk between the couples at least once a week can ensure the blossoming or romance between them and heighten their sexual feelings for each other.
- If one from the couple is suffering from ISD, then a straight invitation for a sexual joyride may totally scare him away. So in such a case, it would be much better to separate sex and affection from each other so that the intimacies of feelings remain intact in the relationship.

Treatment of Inhibited Sexual Desire
- Marital therapy and other procedures, if implemented prior to focusing on the improvement on sexual activity between the couples facing hazards in their relationships, may yield positive results.
- Training on communication skills such as resolving relationship differences through proper understanding and managing anger can help the couple to overcome the differences between them and would further encourage indulging in sexual activity.
- Sometimes people with ISD might need to be taught on sexual relationship between them and such teachings might include lessons on how to approach their partners in more sexually desirable ways.
- By and large, the treatment of ISD should be individualized and should be in accordance with the factors or causes that are responsible for this disorder.
