Male Infertility & Treatment

Male Infertility: Definition

Male infertility can be defined as the obvious inability of a man to impregnate his woman and if a male is unable to father a child after attempting to have babies from his wife for one year without the use of any contraceptive measure he is regarded as infertile.

Prevalence Of Male Infertility

A statement released by the National Institutes Of Health makes it clear that 40% of the 2.6 million married couples in the United States have been unable to bear children as a consequence of male infertility.

Infertile Man and Reproduction

Generally, when a man produces normal sperm and delivers to the female vagina the woman becomes capable of bearing child. The male gland, testicle, situated below the penis, produces sperm and during intercourse this sperm is delivered to the vagina of the female which further makes her capable of delivering a healthy child. But in infertile males, for various reasons sperms in sufficient quantity are not produced in the testicles and further not delivered to the female vagina to ensure the reproduction of a healthy child.

What Leads To Male Infertility?

The Phenomenon Known As Varicoceles

The first and foremost facilitator of male infertility is a bunch of veins known as Varicoceles which work against the process of sperm production and development by preventing the flow of blood. These particular veins are present in the scrotum situated below the penile area in the human body. The amount of these veins is 16 per cent in fertile, healthy men but in infertile men the presence of these specific veins amount to 40 percent.

Oligospermia and Azoospermia

When there is very low sperm production in the testicles (Oligospermia) or when there is no sperm production at all (Azoospermia) in the testicles of a male, it would lead to his infertility.

Abnormally Shaped Sperm Or Deformed Sperm Production

If the produced sperm is not healthy and abnormally shaped then also the man is likely to be infertile.

Lower Hormone Production

Low production of the male hormone testosterone which influences the production and mutation of sperm can also affect the fertility of a man.

Genetical Causes

The sperm transports half of the DNA mix to the female partner's egg and as such if the disorder in the number and structure of male chromosomes, especially if the number of Y chromosomes present in the male is insufficient then also the male is likely to be infertile.

Other Factors causing Male Infertility

  1. smoking addiction
  2. erectile dysfunction
  3. alcohol and marijuana intake
  4. Drugs like steroids and antifungal medications

Prevention

  • Drugs and medicines that are likely to cause infertility should be avoided.
  • Excessive indulgement in exercising should be avoided and when you take part in athletic sports the scrotum section should be protected.
  • Visiting a doctor on regular basis can detect the abnormalities and keep you at a safe distance from male infertility.
  • On practicing protected sex you would remain safe from sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Cure yourself of diabetes and hypothyroidism immediately if you have succumbed to these disorders.

Treatment

  • Minor outpatient surgery (varicocelectomy) repairs Varicoceles to restore fertile manhood.
  • Drugs likeclomiphene or gonadotropin are used as a measure of hormone insufficiency in the pituitary gland.
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is used to place sperms straightly in the uterus and this procedure has yielded good results in restoring sperm count and other movement problems.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a procedure in which a small needle is used to inject sperm directly in the egg and after fertilization the fetus is transferred to the uterus of the female.
